This Members' Colloquium talk explores the mathematical theory of buildings, originally developed as analogs of symmetric spaces for groups over non-archimedian fields. Learn about Bruhat-Tits buildings, the combinatorial tools used to study them, and their relationships to the groups that act upon them. The presentation connects these structures to Grassmannians, flag varieties, and the combinatorics of Coxeter groups. Delivered by Petra Schwer from Heidelberg University, this 54-minute lecture will take place at 1:00pm in Simonyi 101 with remote access options available on March 17, 2025, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study.
