This conference talk from the 38th Chaos Communication Congress (38C3) examines the state of election software security in Germany. Discover how, despite revealing serious security vulnerabilities in widely-used election software before the 2017 German federal election, little has improved. The presenters, Linus Neumann and Thorsten Schröder, investigate whether their 2017 recommendations were implemented by decompiling the software and analyzing changes. Learn about how the software manufacturer has failed to fix the problems, the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security) has produced extensive documentation without solving core issues, and how German election software providers have expanded their cartel. The talk explores how various election mishaps continue to undermine democratic trust and offers a "choose your risk" perspective on election technology security.
