This course, Theoretical Mechanics, studies the general laws of mechanical motion of objects. It’s a basic technical course with intensive use of mathematical methods. The main contents of this course are divided into statics, kinematics and dynamics.

Statics deals with the synthesis and decomposition of forces, the equivalence and simplification of force system, and the equilibrium problem under the action of forces.

Kinematics deals with the general geometrical description of the motions of objects, such as the equation of motion, velocity and acceleration of particles, angular velocity and angular acceleration of rigid body, and the synthesis and decomposition of the motion of objects, etc., but does not relate to the reasons and causes of the motions.

Dynamics studies the laws of motion of material objects under the action of forces.

This course is suitable for the major of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, energy and power engineering, material science, as well as applied mechanics, and so on. By studing of this course, students will master the basic law of mechanical motion (including balance) of objects, and learn to use these basic laws to analyze and solve mechanical problems in engineering. Besides, this course lays the foundation for learning the courses of mechanics of material, structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, vibration theory, theory of machines and mechanisms and some other related follow-up courses.
