Introduction

The major of English (Medical English) of Southern Medical University is currently a National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction site, the only one of its kind among medical universities and colleges in China. It is on this strong foundation that the online course "Practical Medical English" is made,with the joint efforts of an excellent team, a group of outstanding teachers from the School of Foreign Studies of Southern Medical University, who have long been engaged in medical English teaching and research.

"Practical Medical English" is a comprehensive on-line English course for medical purpose. It is intended to enable an integrated, systematic learning of medical knowledge and medical English, with a view of improving the students’ comprehensive ability to apply medical English in real life situations.

The course consists of 8 units. Each unit contains 5 parts, namely: (1) human body systems and vocabulary, (2) formation of medical terminology, (3) clinical literature writing, (4) diversified medical cultures, and (5) an after-class quiz. Students are expected to start with human body system and related English vocabulary, and gradually come to master the formation rules of medical English terms on the basis of their knowledge of stems and affixes. This enables the students not only to have a good command of medical English vocabulary, but also to acquire adequate knowledge of the structure and functions of human body systems, diseases and their diagnoses and treatments. As they advance their studies of clinical literature writing and difersified medical cultures, the integration of language, medicine, and humanity is achieved. As a result, students’ ability to put to use their medical English skills and medical knowledge will be improved, their medical horizons broadened, and their critical thinking developed.
