"Cartography" is a foundational course for the Surveying and Geoinformation Technology major, as well as a professional core skills course designed to cultivate students' abilities in frontline map data production. It is one of the courses within the cartography application competency module. This course incorporates national standards such as "Classification and Numbering of National Fundamental Scale Topographic Maps," "GB/T 20257.1-2017 Cartographic Symbols for National Fundamental Scale Maps—Part 1: 1:500, 1:1,000, 1:2,000 Topographic Maps," "GB/T 20257.1-2017 Cartographic Symbols for National Fundamental Scale Maps—Part 2: 1:5,000, 1:10,000 Topographic Maps," and "GB/T 20257.1-2017 Cartographic Symbols for National Fundamental Scale Maps—Part 3: 1:25,000, 1:50,000, 1:100,000 Topographic Maps." It primarily introduces the fundamental theories, methods, techniques, and applications of cartography.

This course builds upon foundational courses such as "Fundamentals of Surveying" and "Digital Mapping," and lays the groundwork for subsequent courses like "Application of Geographic Information System Technology," "Application of Remote Sensing Technology," and "Digital Photogrammetry." The teaching team consists of instructors with extensive teaching experience and practical expertise in cartographic engineering.

Through this course, students will learn the fundamental theories of cartography, acquire the ability to use GIS software for map projections, master methods for creating map symbols, become familiar with cartographic workflows, and grasp the methods and operational procedures for designing and compiling medium- to large-scale maps. They will also learn techniques for processing and transferring various compilation materials, principles and methods of map generalization, principles of map compilation, and representation methods for terrain and feature elements. This will provide a solid foundation for graduates to apply their knowledge in frontline map data production, including map design and compilation, medium- to large-scale map production, and map generalization.
