Applied Linguistics is one of the core courses for the undergraduate program in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Through this course, students will acquire relevant theoretical knowledge and research methods in applied linguistics. The course consists of seven chapters: Chapter 1 is an introduction to applied linguistics, including the definition and characteristics of applied linguistics. Chapter 2 explores second language acquisition from perspectives such as linguistics, psychology, interaction, sociocultural viewpoints, and learner language. It analyzes common issues in second language teaching and provides relevant teaching suggestions based on input and output perspectives. Chapter 3 introduces the nature and characteristics of sociolinguistics, focusing on knowledge related to language contact, code switching, other sociolinguistic issues associated with language contact, language variation, and cross-border language. Chapter 4 studies relevant knowledge in language planning. Chapter 5 studies the role and classification of corpus and introduces the impact of corpus on language teaching. Chapter 6 focuses on language tests, introducing the definition and types of language tests, with emphasis on test content, question types, test paper design, as well as reliability, validity, discrimination, and feedback effects related to language tests. Chapter 7 discusses issues related to learning motivation, learning style, and learning strategies from the perspective of language learners.
