Advanced English I is a core course for English majors, also open to learners with a solid language foundation. Recognized as a Top Undergraduate and Model Course in Shandong Province, it uses Advanced English 1 (FLTRP) as its main text and explores eight thought-provoking essays. Students will engage with the works of Alice Walker, H. L. Mencken, Winston Churchill, etc., while reflecting on enduring themes such as nature, culture, war and peace, morality, and human values. The course trains you to appreciate diverse genres—from narration and description to argumentation and reportage—while honing skills in structure, rhetoric, and critical analysis. By connecting classic texts with contemporary issues, the course enhances reading, expression, critical thinking, and intercultural competence.
