This course explores how Japanese painters, poets, novelists, and photographers of the nineteenth century collaborated to depict 'real life,' a practice distinct from their European contemporaries. Learners will gain a clear understanding of how society and individuals were represented in early modern Japan. The course highlights the unique combination of Japanese visual and literary culture, where texts inspired images and images were inscribed with poems. Interpreting this indivisibility is key to understanding the social and psychological values embedded in Japanese art. By the end of this course, you will be able to: - Understand Japanese artistic collaboration in the nineteenth century. - Analyze representations of society and individuals in early modern Japan. - Interpret combined visual and literary Japanese cultures. - Re-evaluate artistic realism through a Japanese historical lens. This course is for students, researchers, and enthusiasts of Japanese art, history, and cultural studies. No specific software or tools are required. A general interest in art history or cultural studies is beneficial.

Syllabus

  • Samurai Portraits: Japanese Art History
    • This module introduces how early modern Japanese painters and poets depicted their contemporaries. You will examine samurai portraits to understand how men at the top of the social ladder presented themselves physically and morally within society. You will learn the formal aspects of samurai portraiture and interpret poems and prose inscribed on these images. To succeed, pay close attention to the interplay between visual art and written text.
  • Painted Beauties: Japanese Art Aesthetics
    • This module focuses on visual images of women in Japan before photography. You will examine two types: portraits of real women and idealized 'beauties.' Like samurai portraits, these images often include inscribed texts guiding viewer understanding. You will overview painted and printed images, learning how contemporary viewers used them to interpret their world. Consider how these visual arts reflect social values.
  • Literary Photography: Early Japanese Storytelling
    • How did early modern Japanese artists and writers 'capture the moment'? This module explores their methods and how these influenced Western photography's adaptation in the mid-nineteenth century. You will see how photographic representation integrated into the literary portraiture tradition, building on concepts from modules 1 and 2. Focus on the evolution of visual storytelling.
  • Literary Photography: Modern Japanese Storytelling
    • This final module traces the literary photograph's journey from the late nineteenth century into Japan's modern era. You will examine how photographic images of the human figure, often with inscribed literary writing or captions, became powerful social and psychological documents. We will summarize how visual and written representation combined. Reflect on how these artistic forms shaped modern Japanese storytelling.
