ABOUT THE COURSE:The course is developed to strengthen learners’ understanding of the Victorian Era vis a vis poetry of Tennyson and Browning. It will uncover new sides of Browning’s poetry delving into three major dimensions: philosophy, spirituality and psychology. While he is conventionally explored as a craftsman of dramatic monologue, his poetry also reflects ideas closely linked with our life, especially his firm faith in divine power anchoring the universe. He uncovers human emotions like love, jealously and ambition through dramatic monologues earning him the reputation- Victorian Sigmund Freud. Although he was writing during the time of religious upheaval of 19thcentury, yet his philosophical poems encourage us to keep our faith strong and make meaning out of struggles and challenges. In addition to it, the present course will also delve into Alfred Lord Tennyson to understand him not only as a representative poet but also as a poet of compromise by taking under consideration his master piece poem Ulysses- an epitome of restless exploration and unwavering determination resonating Victorian ethos.   • Dramatic Monologue: Definition, meaning and Literary Significance.
  • Thematic Concerns in select poems of Browning: My Last Duchess, The Last Ride Together, Porphyria’s Lover and Rabbi Ben Ezra.
Week 3:Interpretation of Select Poems: Comparative Insights and Critical Perspective.

  • Interpretation of the poem Ulysses

Week 4:Continuation of the poem Ulysses.

  • Thematic Concerns in select poems of Tennyson: Tithonus, Lotos Eaters, and Ulysses- I & II
Week 5:Comprehensive Analysis of the poem Rabbi Ben Ezra.
  • Rabbi Ben Ezra: Historical and contextual background to the poem
  • Stanza wise exploration of the poem: Stanza 1
  • Stanza 2 & 3: Aspirations of youth and lofty ideals.
  • Stanza 4, 5, and 6: Youth vis a vis old age/soul vs. body.
  • Stanza: 7, 8 and 9: Failures prophesies of success and dialectic of body and soul.
Week 6:Rabbi Ben Ezra: Continuation of the Poem…
  • Stanza: 10, 11 and 12: Gratitude to the divine power and significance of body and soul.
  • Stanzas: 13- 16: Wisdom and maturity as youth’s heritage.
  • Stanzas: 17- 19: Contemplation on past choice, learn today and prepare for tomorrow.
  • Stanza: 20, 21 and 22: Aging as discerning voice.
  • Stanzas: 23 to 25: Evaluation of life not by accomplishments but by efforts.
Week 7:Rabbi Ben Ezra: Continuation of the Analysis.
  • Stanzas: 26 to 28: Scriptural metaphor of Potter and Pitcher.
  • Stanza: 29 and 30: Dismissing worldly life for divine purpose
  • Stanza: 31 and 32: Surrender to the supreme power.
  • Philosophical exploration of two poems: Rabbi Ben Ezra and A Grammarian’s Funeral.
  • Exploration of poetic merit: Rabbi Ben Ezra.
Week 8:Exploration of Poetic Merit, Summarisation of the Course & Quiz.
