In an era of rapidly evolving wireless communications and digital signal processing, industry and academia demand engineers who can design, simulate and implement communication systems with confidence. This intensive course aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing hands-on exposure to MATLAB/Simulink modelling and real-world implementation of software-defined radio (SDR) based systems. Students will learn to model, simulate, validate and deploy communication waveforms, leveraging MATLAB/Simulink toolboxes and SDR hardware platforms. The course will empower learners with essential skills to address real-time signal processing and wireless system design challenges, preparing them for roles in 5G/6G, IoT, wireless research and product-development labs. The following are the main objectives of this hands-on course:
• Develop proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink for modelling communication systems, signal chains and algorithmic blocks
• Understand the basics of software-defined radio (SDR) and its relevance in wireless system prototyping and deployment
• Design, simulate and test baseband communication waveforms (e.g., modulation/demodulation, pulse-shaping) in MATLAB/Simulink
• Interface MATLAB/Simulink models with SDR hardware to perform over-the-air experiments with real RF signals
• Gain experience in debugging, validating and optimizing communication systems, from simulation to hardware deployment
• Build confidence to tackle advanced wireless research topics (such as 5G/6G waveform design, IoT-radio, cognitive radio) and product development pipelines
