ABOUT THE COURSE:
The course aims to approach nuclear physics and particle physics starting from key and classic experiments. Showcased will be fundamental discoveries, many of them leading to Nobel prizes, such as the discovery of the nucleus by Rutherford, all the way upto discovery of neutrino oscillations by the Superkamiokande collaboration and many in between such as rhe discovery of the neutron by Chadwick, that of fission by Hahn, Strassman and Meitner, the direct detection of the elusive neutrino by Reines and Cowan, measurement of its helicity by Goldhaber et al, parity violation by Wu, Lederman and Telegdi et al., the discovery of halo nuclei that opened up the field of Radioactive Ion Beam based research. These will be put in a modern context highlighting the research fields that these findings have led to.
INTENDED AUDIENCE: MSc 1st/2nd year, BTech (Engg. Physics)
PREREQUISITES: BSc (Physics)/2 years in BTech (Engg. Physics)
INDUSTRY SUPPORT: Nuclear Power Corp. India Ltd. could recognize course. However I have not approached them for this.
