Oceanography is the scientific study of the oceans, encompassing their physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects. It explores the vast and dynamic marine environment, examining the origins and evolution of oceans, their role in the hydrological cycle, and the complex interactions between oceanic and atmospheric systems. The discipline also explores the structure and relief features of the ocean floor, the distribution and composition of marine deposits, and the rich diversity of life within the ocean. With oceans covering over 70% of earth's surface, oceanography is critical for understanding global climate patterns, resource management, and addressing contemporary issues like pollution, marine biodiversity loss, and the impact of global warming on sea levels and ecosystems. The course begins with Block 1 on Introduction to Oceanography. It explores the definition, scope, and historical development of the discipline. It also focuses on the importance of oceans in the hydrological cycle and theories regarding their origins, such as the Nebular, Drift Hypotheses, etc. It also examines ocean floor features and sea-floor spreading, emphasising the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Block 2 on Oceanic Features and Deposits discusses about submarine canyons, coral reefs, and ocean deposits, elaborating into their origins, classification, and distribution. This block also deals with an analysis of oceanic resources, both biotic and abiotic, and their potential for future utilisation. Block 3 on Properties of Oceans investigates the different properties of oceans like ocean temperatures, salinity, and seawater density, highlighting their spatio-temporal variations. Finally, Block 4 on Ocean Circulation and Contemporary Issues addresses ocean waves, tides, and currents, examining their distribution and effects, alongside critical contemporary concerns like global warming and its impact on oceans, coastal bleaching, sea-level changes, and policy frameworks related to Exclusive Economic Zones and Coastal Regulation Zones.
