ABOUT THE COURSE:Literature and Medicine in Indian Traditions is an interdisciplinary course that rethinks health, illness and care through Indian literary, philosophical and medical knowledge systems. Moving beyond conventional health humanities, it centres Indian narratives, classical medical texts and postcolonial perspectives on medicine. The course examines medicine as a cultural, ethical and narrative practice rooted in lived experience. It offers learners new ways to engage with health, ethics and knowledge in contemporary India.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:UG, PG, PhD, Pre-PhD, teachers interested in exploring literature and medicine in Indian traditions
PREREQUISITES: No specific prior course is mandatory. The course is designed to be accessible to students with an undergraduate background in Humanities, Social Sciences, or allied interdisciplinary programmes, including students from engineering, science, and biotechnology streams who have completed basic undergraduatelevel coursework. The course will explicitly introduce and clearly articulate all basic and foundational concepts, ensuring that students can engage meaningfully with the material even without any prior knowledge of medical humanities or Indian medical traditions.

INDUSTRY SUPPORT:This course will be valued by sectors that engage with health, culture, ethics, and Indian Knowledge Systems. The course is relevant to and recognised in terms of skill development by organisations and sectors such as healthcare policy and governance bodies, public health organisations, medical publishing and science communication platforms, digital health and health-tech organisations, NGOs working in health and care, cultural and heritage institutions, academic and research think tanks, and organisations engaged in Indian Knowledge Systems, medical ethics, and interdisciplinary research.
