ABOUT THE COURSE:This course is a chronological and thematic survey of the Arabic (one of the six official languages of the United Nations) and its literary trajectories encompassing Asia, Africa, and Europe. It intends to reckon with the grand tapestry of literary genres showcased by Arabic over approximately two millennia since the pre-Islamic period till the postmodern era. The course will traverse through major literary forces and voices in the context of the historical, social, political, religious, and economic changes shaping pastoralist Arabia, Mesopotamia, etc., transcending to their African, Iberian, Hellenistic, Persian and Indian neighbors over the successive epochs.The objective of the course is to enable a critical understanding of the intellectual history of Arabia and to equip the learners to analyze literary traditions in a cross-lingual trajectory of literary culture across ethnicities, communes and continents.INTENDED AUDIENCE:UG/PG students of Arabic besides those interested in Arabic studies referable with basic knowledge of Arabic LanguagePREREQUISITES:No formal pre-requisites.
