ABOUT THE COURSE:
This course on geophysical fluid dynamics introduces advanced undergraduates and postgraduates to the phenomena of oceanic and atmospheric flows. It starts with the basic governing equations in the rotating frame of reference. We then discuss simplified models for geophysical flows and dispersion relations for various waves occurring in a stratified environment. We detail different instabilities in stratified shear flows and finally end with geophysical turbulence. This course develops most concepts from first principles and will build the basics for advanced numerical modelling of the ocean and climate.
PREREQUISITES: Basic and/or advanced fluid mechanics
