Through various lectures covering wide variety of topics like the foundational principles of Raga and Tala, understanding the structural differences between various musical forms performed in Hindustani music, from Raga notation system to classification of Ragas, this course provides the essential theoretical knowledge to comprehend the structural and expressive nuances of Indian classical music specially referring to North Indian or Hindustani Music. It is useful for students of Performing Arts/Music as it covers many topic from their syllabus. WEEK 1 – UNDERSTANDING MUSICAL TERMINOLOGIES

Definition and short explanation of Musical Terminologies of Indian Classical Vocal Music with special reference to North Indian Music
  • Lecture 1 – Sangeet, Dhwani, Naad – Aahat and Anahat, Shruti, Swar – Shuddha and Vikrit, Swar – Chal and Achal, Saptak, Ashtak, Mandra- Madhya- Taar
  • Lecture 2 – Raga, Aaroh-Avaroh-Pakad, Bandish, Sthayi-Antara-Sanchari-Aabhog, Aalaap, Tana, Raga-Jaati
  • Lecture 3 – Laya, Tala, Matra, Theka, Vibhaag, Taali-Khaali-Sama, Varna, Alankaar/Palta
  • Lecture 4 – Marg-Deshi, Gandharva-Gaan, Purvang-Uttarang, Vaadi-Samvaadi-Anuvaadi-Vivaadi swar, Grah, Ansh, Nyas, Alpatva-Bahutva

WEEK 3 – UNDERSTANDING BASIC THEORETICAL CONCEPTS

Explanation of basic musical concepts of Indian Classical Music
  • Lecture 11 – Merits and Demerits of a Vocalist
  • Lecture 12 – Classification of Musical Instruments
  • Lecture 13 – Raga Notation System
  • Lecture 14 – Types of Naad, Gram and its types, Moorchhana
  • Lecture 15 – Tala and its ten pranas


WEEK 4 - UNDERSTANDING ADVANCED THEORETICAL CONCEPTS

Explanation of advanced musical concepts of Indian Classical Music
  • Lecture 16 – Chatuhsarana by Bharat and Sharangadev
  • Lecture 17 – Time Theory of Ragas, Shuddha-Chhayalag and Sankeerna raga
  • Lecture 18 – Kaku and its varieties, Swar Prastar
  • Lecture 19 – Sthay, Alapti and its varieties, Kutap
  • Lecture 20 – Thaat-Raga Classification System
