ABOUT THE COURSE:The course is designed for university students and individuals seeking to enhance their French writing and reading skills. The teaching pedagogy of this course departs starkly from the traditional grammar-translation method by focusing on intercultural competence to enhance basic writing and reading skills in French. The students will be introduced to a varied range of texts from literature, films, radio, and journalism. Further, studying these texts will serve as a window to the French culture and society. The course is also for students who wish to pursue a Master's in French, as it will equip them with writing and comprehension skills required later when studying more advanced courses in French at the Master’s level. Additionally, anyone interested in taking B1 (DELF) exams may also apply for the course.INTENDED AUDIENCE:UG/PG students, /Anyone with a basic level of French, looking to improve their writing skills in FrenchPREREQUISITES:A participant who has completed 1 year (2 semesters) of learning French in the University system or should have a beginner’s level of French equivalent to the A2 level (DELF).INDUSTRY SUPPORT:All companies with French collaboration, such as Amazon, Cognizant, Datamark, Renault, Saint-Gobain, Société Générale, to name a few, as well as Swiss banks like HDFC and ICICI. As project managers with the Embassy of France in India. Additionally, working as French translators for the Ministry of External Affairs, India, and other organisations.

Week 1:Introduction to French literary texts in Français Facile: Detailed analyses of the texts (at least 3) with strategies for improving reading, comprehension and writing skills in French.

Week 2:Writing Skills I: Writing a summary, a portrait of a character, and rewriting select events or imagining a different ending of the story.

Week 3:Introduction to audio-visual texts: Detailed analyses of clips from selected films/short films/series of French Cinema, working on the socio-cultural aspects of the films, familiarising with the visual culture, and developing an understanding of how to develop skills of reading a visual text.

Week 4:Writing Skills II: Hypothesising the plotline, writing synopsis, character descriptions, dialogue, content, film review, describing a place, and role play to improve writing skills.

Week 5:Introduction to audio texts: Detailed analysis of selected radio clips and podcasts in French, familiarising with the French and Francophone accent to understand the content of an audio and to take notes in French based on the audio.

Week 6:Writing skills III: Identifying themes, taking notes, and strategies for answering questions based on an audio-text and enacting a radio interview or radio postcard.

Week 7:Introduction to journalistic writing: Detailed analysis of selected French articles from newspapers, magazines and web magazines on French culture, music, lifestyle, art, and tourism, familiarising with the journalistic register of writing a text and appreciating the nuances of journalistic writing.

Week 8:Writing skills IV: Improving writing skills based on texts from different areas of press, writing a review, a precis, and a short newspaper/magazine article (summary of the previous week’s activities based on intercultural competence).
