ABOUT THE COURSE:
The course begins with a historical perspective to evolution and the important personalities that shaped early ideas. Prominent examples and events that laid the foundation of evolutionary biology are discussed. The next section covers the theory proposed by Darwin and its historical context. Importantly, the contributions of other contemporaries such as Wallace are also discussed. The rediscovery of the works of Mendel and the ensuing debates to reconcile evolution with the concept of particulate inheritance are covered with historical examples. The third week ends by looking at the impact of the genomics era. The subsequent weeks introduce some core concepts in evolutionary biology and the link between genotype & phenotype. Demonstrations will introduce the students to the use of computational tools.
