ABOUT THE COURSE:The course aims to provide an overview of various dimensions of the business environment and some framework to analyze it. It seeks to familiarize the students with various aspects of India's economic, social, political, and cultural environment. It intends to provide a deeper understanding of the environmental factors influencing business enterprises. The course also highlights the legal framework in the Indian context such as the contract law, companies law, cyber to name a few. The course will have a pragmatic view on applying the knowledge in the real life situation.INTENDED AUDIENCE: B.Com., BBA/BBM, M.Com. Syllabus

Week 1: Introduction- Concept, Characteristics, dimensions, and relevance of Business environment. Types of environment: internal & external environment, micro and macro environment.

Week 2:Frameworks for Analyzing Business Environment- Analyzing Business Environment- Environmental Scanning-the 3 Cs framework, and vision mission, objectives and values analysis, SWOT analysis, PESTEL/STEPIN/STEPLEDGE frameworks. SAP-LAP framework, Industry analysis using Porter’s five forces, Value chain analysis

Week 3:Global environment: Globalization & its impact on Indian Economy-Meaning & levels of globalization, Reasons and approaches with which nations and firms go global.

Week 4:Economic Environment-I- Economic development and sectoral analysis, Analyzing economic policies- monetary policy, fiscal policy, and industrial policy

Week 5:Economic Environment-II- Trade Policy – Economic Development and role of government – Privatization & Public Systems Management.

Week 6:Socio-cultural environment In India- Salient features of Indian society – demographics, class & caste structure of Indian society, Secularism in Indian Society, Rural – Urban differences, Joint family system, Business Participation in social & cultural affairs, Size & growth rate of population, Age structure of population, Demographic dividend & its impact on business & growth. Effects of society and culture on business. Social Responsibility and Business.

Week 7:Technological Environment in India- Technology & competitive Advantage Changing technological environment in India, in-house R& D in Indian Industries, differences in the levels of science & technology across countries

Week 8:Natural Environment- Environmental protection & sustainable Industrial development, Tripple Bottom Line and sustainability, Environmental Degradation, Environmental policy, EMS Standard, ISO 14000, and Environmental Auditing.

Week 9:Political and Legal Environment- Basic tenets of the Indian Constitution, Review of functions of Political institutions in India-Legislature, Executive & Judiciary, their influence on Indian Business, center-state relationships evolving role of state /government.

Week 10:Legal Aspects of Business-The Law of Contract, 1872, The Consumer Protection Act and Cyber Law

Week 11:The Sale of Goods Act, 1830, and The Partnership Act, 1932

Week 12:The Companies Act, 2013, The Competition Law
