ABOUT THE COURSE:Criminology, Penology, and Victimology are interrelated branches of criminal justice that together provide a comprehensive understanding of crime, criminals, punishment, and victims. Criminology focuses on the study of crime as a social phenomenon, examining its causes, patterns, and impact on society. It seeks to understand why individuals commit crimes, how crime varies across time and place, and how social, economic, and psychological factors influence criminal behavior.Penology deals with the philosophy and practice of punishment. It examines various forms of punishment, such as imprisonment, probation, parole, and rehabilitation, with the aim of preventing crime and reforming offenders. Penology emphasizes humane treatment, correctional reforms, and the effectiveness of penal systems in reducing recidivism and maintaining social order.Victimology, a comparatively newer discipline, centers on the study of victims of crime. It explores the experiences, rights, and needs of victims, as well as their role within the criminal justice system. Victimology highlights the physical, emotional, and social consequences of crime and advocates for victim protection, compensation, and restorative justice. Together, these three disciplines contribute to a balanced and holistic approach to criminal justice, focusing not only on offenders and punishment but also on prevention, rehabilitation, and victim welfare.
