Climate Change Vulnerability refers to the degree to which people, communities, ecosystems, and economic sectors are susceptible to the adverse impacts of climate change. Vulnerability depends on three main factors:

  1. Exposure – the extent to which a system experiences climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, and cyclones.
  2. Sensitivity – how strongly a system is affected by these hazards.
  3. Adaptive Capacity – the ability to cope with, respond to, and recover from climate impacts.

For example, coastal communities are highly vulnerable because they are exposed to sea-level rise, storm surges, and coastal erosion.

Climate Change Adaptation refers to the actions and strategies taken to adjust to actual or expected climate change impacts in order to reduce risks and enhance resilience. Adaptation can occur at local, regional, national, and global levels.

Examples of adaptation measures include:

  • Developing drought-resistant crop varieties.
  • Improving water conservation and management.
  • Constructing flood protection infrastructure.
  • Enhancing early warning systems for extreme weather events.
  • Promoting climate-resilient urban planning.

In summary, vulnerability describes the risk and susceptibility to climate change impacts, while adaptation involves measures taken to reduce those risks and build resilience. Together, they are essential components of sustainable development and climate change management.
