Stanford Center for Continuing Medical Education, Stanford Medcast Episode 23: COVID-19 Mini-series - Reflections on COVID-19 Management in Nursing Homes, 9/7/2021 12:00:00 AM - 9/7/2024 12:00:00 AM, This episode explores how nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities have played a central role in the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. The discussion will include the early days of the pandemic, including the outbreak in Washington state, the serious call to action the outbreak had on the rest of the country and in particular, California. Lessons learned over the past 18 months are shared along with the need for further education, both for physicians, who receive most of their training in hospitals and clinics and not in skilled nursing facilities, and also the support staff in skilled nursing facilities, who are traditionally underpaid and often lack education on infection control. Vaccine hesitancy is discussed, along with new government funded initiatives that support ongoing education across all skilled nursing facilities.
