This course teaches scientists to become more effective writers, using practical examples and exercises. Topics include: principles of good writing, tricks for writing faster and with less anxiety, the format of a scientific manuscript, peer review, grant writing, ethical issues in scientific publication, and writing for general audiences.
Syllabus
- Writing Clearly: Principles and Clarity
- This module introduces the course and the core principles of effective scientific writing. Learners will explore why writing can feel difficult, why it improves with practice, and how strong writing depends on clarity rather than complexity. Through examples and editing practice, learners will learn how to cut clutter, simplify sentences, and communicate ideas more clearly and concisely. By the end of the module, learners will be able to recognize common habits that weaken writing and revise prose for greater clarity and focus.
- Strong Sentences: Verbs, Voice, and Flow
- This module focuses on building stronger sentences by choosing clear subjects, strong verbs, and direct sentence structures. Learners will practice using the active voice effectively, avoiding unnecessary nominalizations, and making sure the main action of a sentence is easy to find. The module also highlights a few common grammar issues that can interfere with clarity. By the end of the module, learners will be able to write more direct, energetic sentences that are easier for readers to follow.
- Punctuation and Paragraphs: Building Better Prose
- This module helps learners strengthen their writing at the sentence and paragraph level. Learners will practice using punctuation such as colons, dashes, parentheses, and semicolons to guide emphasis and improve flow. The module also explores sentence variety, parallel structure, and paragraph organization, with attention to how repetition can sometimes improve clarity in scientific writing. By the end of the module, learners will be able to craft more focused paragraphs and more varied, readable sentences.
- The Writing Process: Draft, Revise, Refine
- This module examines the writing process as a practical series of steps that can make writing more manageable and more effective. Learners will explore strategies for pre-writing, drafting, revising, and checking a final draft, with emphasis on working more efficiently and reducing writing anxiety. The module reinforces the idea that strong writing emerges through revision rather than in a single draft. By the end of the module, learners will be able to approach writing more strategically and improve their work through a structured process.
- The Scientific Manuscript: From Results to Abstract
- This module introduces the structure and purpose of the main sections of a scientific manuscript. Learners will examine how to present data effectively in tables and figures and how to write clear Results, Methods, Introduction, Discussion, and Abstract sections. The emphasis is on understanding what each section needs to accomplish and how they work together to tell a coherent scientific story. By the end of the module, learners will be able to identify the key features of each manuscript section and produce stronger, more purposeful scientific prose.
- Publishing with Integrity: Ethics, Authorship, and Submission
- This module explores the ethical and professional issues involved in scientific publication. Learners will examine plagiarism, authorship, the submission process, common challenges faced by new authors, and how to identify predatory journals. The module emphasizes responsible publication practices and helps learners better understand how scientific work moves from manuscript to journal submission. By the end of the module, learners will be better prepared to navigate publishing decisions ethically and confidently.
- Beyond the Research Paper: Grants, Reviews, and Professional Writing
- This module expands beyond the original research manuscript to other common forms of scientific and professional writing. Learners will explore how review articles differ from research papers, how grant writing works, and the key characteristics of effective letters of recommendation and personal statements. The module emphasizes recognizing how structure, tone, and purpose vary across professional contexts. By the end of the module, learners will be able to identify conventions of several important scientific writing genres and explain strategies appropriate to each.
- Writing for the Public: Media, News, and Broader Audiences
- This module focuses on communicating science beyond specialist audiences. Learners will examine why public communication matters, how to speak with journalists, how interviews work from both sides, and how writing for general audiences differs from writing for scientists. The module also introduces the structure of a science news story and considers the role of social media in science communication. By the end of the module, learners will be able to adapt scientific ideas for broader audiences and communicate more effectively in public-facing settings.
