Overview

Quantum mechanics courses typically require you to learn a lot of high-level math in addition to the science, making it challenging to absorb and apply quantum ideas. Students often take these classes multiple times before they even begin to understand. In this course, we teach quantum mechanics in a representation-independent fashion that focuses on operators. The prerequisite math is lower, and we need to develop less of it. This allows us to focus on developing conceptual understanding and on relating quantum ideas to real experiments. We are amidst the second quantum revolution, where we observe and manipulate individual quanta. This has ushered in the new field of quantum information science, with its three pillars of quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum sensing. This course will prepare you best for the quantum sensing side of quantum information science. You will even learn enough quantum mechanics to understand how the laser interferometry gravitational wave observatory works---one of the engineering marvels of humankind. Prerequisites: The three-semester calculus sequence and a math methods course are required. Freshman physics and modern physics are recommended. This course is appropriate for those with backgrounds in physics, chemistry, and engineering who are interested in learning quantum mechanics with a focus on applications to quantum sensing.

    This course is an exceptional tour de force (and an amazing labor of love) from one of the best teachers of Quantum Mechanics in the world today. Prospective students are encouraged to take the shorter Quantum Mechanics for Everyone first (if possible) even though the information in that class is in fact included properly in the first part of this longer course. It is also useful to have taken Mathematical and Computational Methods (from the same teacher, Georgetown's own Jim Freericks) first. This is not an easy class, but if you liked Feynman's QED or any of Daniel F Styer's books you will absolutely LOVE this class. Freericks has the same crystal clear style but delves much deeper. Fantastic teacher, amazing class.

    This is an excellent course that will complement any other quantum mechanics course you may have taken (such as the MIT 8.04-8.06 series). It explores basic and advanced topics using an approach that differs from most textbooks and focuses more on the original methods of the early pioneers, particularly on operator algebra. This is very effective at developing intuition and insight that is otherwise hard won by, and allows quite complex problems to be solved, often with less math than needed with a calculus-based approach. The instructor is very attentive and helpful on the forums and his enthusiasm is infectious. The course is hard work but great fun and very additive!

    This is an amazing course. I went into it on the audit knowing that much of it would be over my head but realizing that there would still be so much I could learn. I'd like to retake the course on the audit track after spending some time in individual study (I'm retired and study Quantum Theory simply because I love learning it).

    I'd love it if there would be a course in between the levels of this one and QM for Everyone, for which I received a certificate, and I'd definitely take ANY another course taught by Prof. Freericks..Thanks, Prof. Freericks, for this wonderful learning opportunity.

    Fascinating introduction to quantum mechanics. It's quite rigorous so expect a fair amount of math (mainly linear algebra, a superficial smattering of calculus, but the math notes make it so that you anyone can catch up fast, alternatively Khan academy will do as well). The lecturer is passionate about the course and it shows, particularly in the way he personally answers student queries right away.

    One of the best online QM courses I've ever passed. Unique combination of very intuitive physical pictures in the beginning of the course, strong, solid and fresh operator based theoretical approach to QM and plenty of experimental date, methods and technics creates engagement and helps to pass thru difficult and non-intuitive topics. Very recommend to take it.
