VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) enables you to enhance and extend the capabilities of Microsoft® Excel® and other applications in the Microsoft® 365 application suite. You can use VBA to perform tasks that would be difficult or impossible to do using only worksheet functions, and you can automate a wide range of tasks involving the collection, processing, analysis, and visualization of data. This Specialization will give you a good foundation for understanding, creating, and using VBA in your own Excel workbooks, show you how to work with data across different applications, and how to package the macros and functions you create so you can back them up, move them to other computers, and share them with other users.
This Specialization is primarily designed for students who want to gain the skills necessary to use VBA to automate tasks in Excel such as collecting data from external sources, cleaning, and manipulating data. The target student may also want to learn how to create custom worksheet functions to streamline worksheet formulas and make complex worksheets easier to support, maintain, and understand.
Syllabus
- Course 1: Excel VBA Macros: Automating Tasks
- Course 2: Excel VBA Macros: Custom Functions and Structures
- Course 3: Excel VBA Macros: Forms, Files, and Data Handling

This course will be useful to anyone who wants to gain the skills necessary to use Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to automate tasks in Excel such as collecting data from external sources, cleaning, and manipulating data. You will begin by identifying components of macro-enabled workbooks and configuring the Excel VBA environment. You'll also automate repetitive tasks by using the macro recorder, recording a macro with relative addressing, deleting macros and modules, and identifying strategies for using the macro recorded. Then, you'll use VBA help, use the object browser, and use the immediate window to explore object properties and methods. This is the first course in a multi-course Specialization. All of the courses in this Specialization require that you have a recent version of Microsoft Excel installed. The course setup instructions provided in the first module of this course go into more detail about the hardware and software requirements.

In this course, you'll continue developing your VBA skills in Excel by creating custom functions, making decisions in code, working with variables, and performing repetitive tasks. You'll also debug VBA errors, deal with errors, and improve macro performance. Then, you'll prompt the user for more information and configure macros to run automatically. This is the second course in a multi-course Specialization. All of the courses in this Specialization require that you have a recent version of Microsoft Excel installed. The course setup instructions provided in the first course go into more detail about the hardware and software requirements.

To round out your data-analysis skills in VBA for Excel, you'll display a custom dialog box and program form events. You'll also use VBA to get file and directory structure, read from text files, and write to text files. Then, you'll clean and transform data by automating Power Query, transform data using VBA and workbook functions, using regular expressions, and managing errors in data. Lastly, you'll run other programs and commands and share your VBA projects. This is the third and final course in a multi-course Specialization. All of the courses in this Specialization require that you have a recent version of Microsoft Excel installed. The course setup instructions provided in the first course go into more detail about the hardware and software requirements.
