Throughout the module, you will explore topics covering:

  1. Education for women with pre-existing diabetes on the importance of pre-conception care
  2. Local and national guidelines for pre-existing diabetes and pregnancy
  3. Safe and effective contraceptive methods
  4. Identification of medications contraindicated in pregnancy
  5. Reasons for higher doses of folic acid
  6. The recognition and treatment of hypoglycaemia
  7. Appropriate referral systems
Every health worker provides care to people with diabetes regardless of clinical context.Diabetes and diabetes managementiscomplexandconstantly evolving. The School of Medicine at Western Sydney University (WSU) has recently launched the Western Diabetes Education Program (WDEP) for clinicians and health workers who would like to enhance their understanding of diabetes and diabetes care. Based on diabetes competencyframeworks, WDEPis designed to enhance diabetes 'knowledge' and 'know how' in the essentials of diabetes care for Medical Officers (General Practitioners and Junior Medical Officers), Registered Nurses, Practice Nurses, Midwives, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Exercise Physiologists, Allied Health Professionals, Health Managers, Aboriginal Health Workers and Community Health Workers.

Syllabus

  • Establish awareness for the importance of pre-conception care, including contraception, in reducing the risk of complications during pregnancy in women with diabetes
  • Demonstrate foundational level knowledge to enable provision of pre-conception care
  • Safe and effective contraceptive methods
  • Identification of medications contraindicated in pregnancy
  • Reasons for higher doses of folic acid
  • The recognition and treatment of hypoglycaemia
  • Appropriate referral systems
  • Identify medicines contraindicated in pregnancy and make appropriate referral
  • Be aware of the need for the higher dose of folic acid
  • Know how to recognise and treat hypoglycaemia appropriately
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate referral system, including to the specialist diabetes team
