Course Lead

Dr. Russell Thomson.

Russell is a statistical consultant at Western Sydney University, where he enjoys helping HDR students and staff with their research projects. He coordinates regular workshops on statistical analysis for researchers in SPSS, R, STATA and SAS through the Graduate Research School. Russell has experience in applying data analysis and machine learning techniques to a vast array of fields, including medical science, ecology, education and social sciences; for research and for industry. This can be seen in his extensive publication list (Russell's Google Scholar Page). He presents examples from his extensive experience in this course.

Syllabus

  • Identify the basics of R for data analysis in Module 1.
  • Apply appropriate types of machine learning techniques and model for different data sets in Module 2.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge about language acquisition and processing
  • Describe and explain how languages differ and change over time
  • Apply fundamental concepts and appropriate theoretical knowledge to analyse data and the selected problem set
