Recommended Prior Knowledge

Basic knowledge of human biology and physiology at pre-university, foundation, matriculation, STPM, A-Level, or equivalent level is recommended. Familiarity with basic concepts of cell function, organ systems, and digestion will be helpful. No advanced knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology is required.

Syllabus

  • Describe the endocrine regulation of the gastrointestinal system, including the roles of gastrin, secretin, cholecystokinin, GIP, and somatostatin.
  • Describe the components, functions, and regulation of pancreatic secretion in digestive processes.
  • Describe the physiology of bile secretion, bile salt function, gallbladder regulation, and enterohepatic circulation.
  • Describe the roles of the liver in metabolic regulation, vitamin D activation, and detoxification.
