This course is a collaborative project between IMU University, Malaysia and Dalhousie University, Canada. Expert contributions in this course are from Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health, A.T. Still University, USA, and Université Laval, Quebec, Canada.

Introduction:

This evidence-based micro-credential provides healthcare professionals, clinicians, and academic faculty with advanced competencies in tobacco cessation interventions. Designed to align with current clinical practice guidelines, this course addresses the critical need for specialized training in addressing tobacco use disorder within diverse healthcare settings.

The curriculum systematically progresses through the epidemiology of tobacco use, pathophysiological consequences, evidence-based intervention strategies, and emerging nicotine delivery systems. Participants will develop proficiency in motivational interviewing techniques specifically tailored to tobacco dependency, pharmacotherapeutic approaches, and structured cessation planning methodologies.

This micro-credential encompasses 40 contact hours (1 academic credit) distributed across seven specialized modules. The pedagogical framework integrates theoretical foundations with applied clinical scenarios, facilitating the development of practical competencies essential for effective tobacco cessation counselling.

Syllabus

  • Explain the tobacco epidemic and the factors contributing to tobacco use disorder
  • Identify the health consequences of smoking and the benefits of quitting
  • Evaluate various tobacco cessation interventions currently used to help people who want to quit smoking
  • Apply Motivational Interviewing techniques to support patients in their journey to quit smoking
  • Analyze pharmacological therapy options for treating tobacco dependency and determine when they are needed
  • Develop a comprehensive quit plan for patients and outline strategies to help them stay smoke-free
  • Assess the most recent challenges in tobacco control measures, including the impact of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS)
