Note that this course is self-paced. As a guide, this course may take up to4hours to complete. There is no prerequisite for this course. Note that many content pages will have a short assessment task whichneedsto be completed to graduate from this course.
This course is structured across four modules covering the fundamentals of lithium-ion battery technology and safety. Each module is delivered through short, focused lessons, with interactive quiz questions to reinforce learning. All quizzes must be completed correctly to receive your certificate.
Module 1: Lithium-Ion Battery Fundamentals
Build a strong foundation in how lithium-ion batteries work, where they’re used, and how they compare to other technologies. You’ll develop a clear understanding of their structure, performance characteristics, and limitations.
Key topics include:
- What lithium-ion batteries are and where they are used
- Advantages and limitations compared to other battery technologies
- Internal components and how batteries function
- Different types of lithium-ion cells and their properties
Module 2: Battery Hazards and Failure Risks
Learn to identify, assess, and understand the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. This module equips you to recognise early warning signs and understand the causes of failure.
Key topics include:
- Common hazard scenarios and risk factors
- Thermal runaway and how it occurs
- Electrical abuse (overcharging, overdischarging, short circuits)
- Mechanical damage and physical failure
- Environmental impacts such as leakage
- Real-world examples of battery failures
Module 3: Battery Management Systems (BMS)
Gain insight into how battery management systems ensure safe and reliable operation. You’ll understand their role in monitoring, protection, and performance optimisation.
Key topics include:
- What a BMS is and why it is critical
- Where BMS is used across devices and applications
- Key parameters monitored (e.g. temperature, voltage, current)
- How BMS helps prevent unsafe conditions
Module 4: Safe Use in Real-World Applications
Develop practical knowledge to safely select, use, and manage lithium-ion battery-powered devices across everyday and professional contexts.
Key topics include:
- Safe selection, charging, and operation of e-mobility devices
- Storage, cleaning, and maintenance best practices
- Identifying and responding to damaged or faulty devices
- Assessing battery and product quality (cells, packs, and systems)
- Safe handling of power tools, chargers, and operating environments
- Manufacturer guidelines and safe usage standards
