What is this course about?
Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory conditions in adults worldwide and a leading cause of tooth loss. Beyond the mouth, it is firmly linked to systemic conditions including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and numerous comorbidities, while also measurably affecting patients' quality of life and economic wellbeing. Despite this, periodontitis remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in everyday clinical practice.
This MOOC, developed in line with the 2017 AAP/EFP Classification System and current EFP clinical practice guidelines, provides dental professionals with a structured, evidence-based framework for the full spectrum of periodontal therapy.
Across four weeks, you will explore the complete periodontal care pathway. In Week 1, you will learn to classify and stage periodontitis, select and interpret 2D and 3D diagnostic imaging, assess tooth-level prognosis, and discover how precision periodontics and artificial intelligence are transforming periodontal diagnosis and care. Week 2 is dedicated to patient motivation and oral hygiene instruction, with practical clinical video demonstrations of toothbrushing, interdental cleaning aids, and adjunctive tools.
In Week 3, you will explore the relationship between periodontal disease and general health covering the global burden of periodontitis, the role of nutrition in shaping the oral microbiome, comorbidity and multimorbidity, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) as a key patient-reported outcome.
Week 4 focuses on systemic and lifestyle risk factor control, including evidence-based smoking cessation strategies, the bidirectional diabetes-periodontitis relationship, and cardiovascular disease associations.
Delivered through expert lectures, and online assessment, this course is designed for general dental practitioners, dental hygienists, and senior undergraduate dentistry students worldwide.
