Influence at work depends on more than formal authority. This specialization examines power as a relationship shaped by resources, alternatives, dependence, and informal networks. Learners explore personal, positional, and relational sources of power—and how to cultivate and use power responsibly.
Across two beginner-level courses, learners build practical skills for diagnosing power dynamics, influencing decisions, strengthening professional relationships, and pursuing meaningful change. Scenario-based exercises and applied activities help learners connect course concepts to real workplace challenges.
The specialization is designed for early- and mid-career professionals seeking greater credibility and impact, aspiring entrepreneurs challenging the status quo, and nonprofit leaders working to advance social impact. It’s an introductory adaptation of the HBS Online course Power and Influence for Positive Impact, taught by Julie Battilana, the Joseph C. Wilson Professor of Business Administration in the Organizational Behavior unit at Harvard Business School and Alan L. Gleitsman Professor of Social Innovation at Harvard Kennedy School.
Syllabus
- Course 1: Understanding Fundamental Power Dynamics
- Course 2: Building Influence Through Relationships
Courses
-
How can relationships become a source of power and positive impact? Building Influence Through Relationships explores how professional networks shape access to information, resources, opportunities, and support. Learners examine how to look beyond formal organizational structures to identify central players and map power dynamics, then explore how the breadth, depth, and density of a network affect its value. They also consider how reciprocity, bridging across different groups, and authentic relationship building can strengthen relational sources of power. By the end of the course, learners will be better prepared to diagnose the networks around them, evaluate how well their own relationships support their aspirations, and develop mutually enriching relationships that help them create positive impact.
-
What does it take to understand and use power effectively? Understanding Fundamental Power Dynamics challenges common assumptions about who has power, where it comes from, and how it works. Learners examine power as a relationship of dependence, explore the resources and alternatives that shape the balance of power, and learn strategies for shifting that balance. They also consider personal, positional, and relational sources of power and examine how humility, empathy, and structural safeguards can help prevent power from being misused. By the end of the course, learners will be better prepared to recognize power dynamics, develop the power needed to create change, and use that power responsibly in pursuit of positive impact.
