Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

This is the fourth MOOC I've take with the U of Tasmania and knew exactly what I was getting myself into when I enrolled. It provides a great overview of the topic of TBI in a logical and easy to understand format. You can be involved as much or as little as you want to be and the workload is very manageable. I wanted to review information that I had learned over 7 years ago and wanted a refresher now that I am working in the field of rehab. I often get clients referred to me by our neuro PT and this course has helped me to further understand the programs and interventions that she has prepared for them. I find neuro fascinating and appreciated listening to the professors, seeing the graphics and the followup videos at the end of each section where individuals who had sustained a TBI or their family members or caregivers spoke about the circumstances and the rehab associated with the TBI. I highly recommend this to other health care practitioners who may work with clients/patients with TBI or their family/friends to help them to understand this hidden injury that still unfortuntely is stigmatized. Any one of us could be a moment away from a similar experience so understanding and empathy on the topic would be one step towards helping to destigmatize it.

The course of TBI can vary widely depending on the severity of the injury, the area of the brain affected, and the individual's overall health. Here is a review of the course of TBI:

Medical professionals closely monitor the patient's vital signs, administer necessary treatments, and perform imaging tests to assess the extent of brain damage. Subacute Phase: The subacute phase follows the acute phase and can last for several weeks or months. During this phase, the individual's condition stabilizes, and rehabilitation becomes the primary focus. Rehabilitation programs may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and cognitive therapy. The goal is to help the person regain functional abilities and promote recovery.

Chronic Phase: The chronic phase begins when the person's condition has stabilized, and ongoing rehabilitation efforts are focused on maximizing long-term recovery. Supportive services, such as vocational rehabilitation or psychological counseling, may also be provided to facilitate the individual's reintegration into society.

I'm over 70 and recently became a carer for my husband who suffered a minor stroke. The Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury course has provided a knowledge framework for understanding and responding in an informed way to ensuing lifestyle changes.
Why? Because he is a changed person.

The course empowered me with a new vocabulary and objective approach to have conversations with hubby. These conversations are like a breath of fresh forest air wisping through us.

Learning what happens, and, what else can happen when a brain receives a traumatic event prompts fabulous food for thought. I have sharpened my self protection to avoid trips and falls when out gardening. I have soften my stubbornness to still climb ladders.

The course has convinced me that I alone do not have the capacity to provide all the support needed for hubby to achieve his 'new full potential'. Hubby is looking forward to feedback from his 3-hour consultation with his Neuropsychologist. Yes! actually looking forward to this. He has hope for something. But on his own he doesn't know what.

The experienced professional who deliver that educative material present the complex information in a style that facilitates learning. Where needed, the learner can 'rewind' the text, video or other formats to go slower.

The people sharing their case studies bring the formal information to life. Very brave recoverers.

I would highly recommend this course to anyone who works in healthcare, education, social services, or even those who simply want to broaden their understanding of brain health and trauma.

Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a good course for the beginer without the medical and clinical background. The course is starting from the basic and lead you to know about the main cause of injury. At the begining, I think Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is happening at the people whom are playing the sports such as rugby. Later on, I discover that it is a collision sport, traumatic injuries do occur in rugby. They can include fractured bones, dislocated fingers and elbows, cuts, sprained ligaments and strained tendons or muscles and deep muscle bruises. There has been an increase of facial fractures, especially of the nose because helmets are not worn. Studying further and find that it may be happened to the old people and even as little as a baby. The recover period is last for few weeks to few years. This is a good course and let me think about all the issues which may be happened around us.

The first time I came across the MOOC TBI was June last year. I had completed several other short courses at that time and felt a bit tired and overwhelmed completing the course.
So I enrolled again in March this year 2022 with the intention to get out of the course more than I did last year. With work and family commitments this time around I was again not able to listen to extra video clips and exploring extra resources such as websites and recommended articles. However, I pushed myself to read the learning material multiple times to stay tuned. The module which I found fascinating this time in comparison to last year was module 4 where life after TBI is discussed. The addition of Professor Barbara Wilson in module 4 in comparison to the TBI course of June 2021 is so worth while having in this final module. It is confronting but so true to hear from her that people with severe brain injury despite years of rehabilitation and personal effort will not get back where they were before the injury. Resilience, social network, family support - yes - this all plays a role. Affected are the person with injury and people around them.
What a great and well presented course. I won't do the course again with the next intake of 22nd of August, but I hope it is offered again next year.

As a mature age student, I was apprehensive about undertaking a MOOC course but after completing the Understanding Dementia course with a high pass rate and found I thoroughly enjoyed the experience I enrolled for the T.B.I. course which I have now completed again to a high pass rate.

As added spice my three adult children all University graduates were most impressed at their old man's accomplishments.

I am now enrolled in the next MOOC course, Preventing Dementia and am looking forward to being challenged once more.

These courses are amazingly good at fostering a new and revived sense of learning. I found things initially difficult and felt I had to learn------how to learn but that was a positive experience.

Keep on delivering MOOC courses and I will keep on undertaking them.

I have found this course to be very inspiring and eye-opening. Like everyone, I have known people over the years who have experienced TBI and now I understand better the challenges they experience and the cause of them. This material was presented in a practical way, geared for the lay-person to understand. I really appreciated the written text that accompanied each segment, as it helped me to absorb the information at my pace. Thank you for sharing the positive direction medical science is finding with research on TBI's today. I was especially fascinated by how unique each person's brain is, and how unique each person's experience of TBI and rehabilitation is. Prof. Gavin William's discussion on physiotherapy, and how he applies his knowledge of human muscle function to create individual therapy programs, was the highlight for me. I am amazed at how resourceful and creative everyone in this field is in their quest for truth and better life quality for victims of TBI.
