The IBM Business Process Automation with AI Assistants Specialization prepares business analysts, operations managers, and automation practitioners to design, build, and scale AI-powered automation using IBM watsonx Orchestrate. Across three progressive courses, you will develop practical skills in process discovery, AI assistant configuration, workflow orchestration, governance, and enterprise scaling without requiring a coding background. You will apply structured frameworks to identify and prioritize high-impact processes, interpret IBM Process Mining outputs, and construct defensible business cases. Through hands-on labs in IBM watsonx Orchestrate, you will configure working AI assistants that handle conversational intake, triage, routing, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints for realistic business scenarios. The program addresses responsible AI through the IBM AI Ethics and Trust Framework. The capstone produces a portfolio-ready end-to-end automation solution. No coding or technical AI experience required.
Syllabus
- Course 1: Foundations and High-Impact Process Identification
- Course 2: Designing and Building AI Assistant Workflows
- Course 3: Deploying, Governing, and Scaling AI-Powered Automation

A working assistant in a trial environment is not the same as a governed, measurable automation that drives enterprise value. Most automation programs struggle to move from successful pilots to sustained, scaled results because they lack the testing discipline, governance structures, and measurement practices that keep automation accountable over time. This course, Deploying, Governing, and Scaling AI-Powered Automation, addresses every dimension of that challenge. You will design test packs, plan controlled rollouts, set up monitoring that catches drift, and establish feedback loops. You will also apply the IBM AI Ethics and Trust Framework to build responsible-AI assessments, governance controls, and audit trails; define automation metrics; design dashboards for operational and executive audiences; and close the loop with the original business case. From there, you will plan how a single successful assistant becomes an enterprise automation program. By course completion, you will have assembled a portfolio-ready End-to-End Automation Solution integrating opportunity assessment, assistant build, governance, measurement, and a scaling plan.

Many automation initiatives stall between analysis and implementation because practitioners lack the hands-on skills to configure a working AI assistant. This course, Designing and Building AI Assistant Workflows, closes that gap. You will study the anatomy of an AI assistant, including skills, tools, instructions, knowledge sources, and routing logic, and then build your first working assistant end-to-end in your own IBM watsonx Orchestrate free-trial instance for a realistic business scenario. You will also learn to connect assistants to enterprise data sources at a business-configuration level, write integration requirements that IT teams can act on without rework, and design conversational intake, triage, classification, and routing workflows with human-in-the-loop checkpoints and exception paths that fail gracefully. By course completion, you will have produced an End-to-End AI Assistant Build with a configured, working assistant, instructions documentation, integration specifications, and a complete intake-triage-routing flow evidenced by screenshots and a test report.

Organizations invest in automation that fails to deliver value because they automate the wrong processes or skip the analytical work that separates high-impact candidates from low-return distractions. This course, Foundations and High-Impact Process Identification, builds the analytical foundation that prevents that outcome. You will study the automation continuum from manual work through RPA to AI-powered and agentic automation, tour IBM watsonx Orchestrate and the broader IBM Business Automation portfolio at a business-user level, and develop a structured approach to process decomposition and automation readiness assessment. Through discovery interviews, observation, and IBM Process Mining interpretation, you will surface how work actually happens rather than how people describe it. You will then apply a value-versus-feasibility framework to prioritize candidates, design a future-state process with human-in-the-loop checkpoints and exception paths, and build a defensible business case with ROI estimates, risk framing, and an adoption plan. By course completion, you will have produced a Process Opportunity Portfolio Deliverable ready for stakeholder review.
