New technologies such as artificial intelligence, gene editing, organoids, and electronic informed consent hold enormous promise for research and healthcare, but they also raise complex ethical questions that researchers and ethics committee members must carefully consider to ensure responsible and trustworthy science.

For example, how can we responsibly evaluate research involving artificial intelligence? What ethical concerns arise with gene editing technologies? Why do organoids raise unique ethical questions? What challenges emerge when using electronic informed consent?

Through cases studies, videos, interviews, and exercises we will show you will acquire the skills to identify

ethically sensitive or problematic issues in research in innovative fields. The course will give you the tools to apply your moral reasoning in research and conduct ethical review of a research project.

This MOOC is part of the CHANGER project. CHAllenges and innovative chaNGes in research Ethics Reviews (CHANGER) is a three-year Coordination and Support Action (CSA) project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon WIDERA programme aiming to promote changes in research ethics reviews by strengthening the capacities of researchers to incorporate ethical judgements in the project design and implementation, and by supporting capacity building of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) to address new challenges posed by new technologies and new research practices.

This project has received funding from the European Commission Horizon WIDERA under Grant Agreement No 101131683.
