Façades are the most visible part of a building, yet they do not receive the attention they deserve in education – and they should! Façades play an important role in creating a healthy indoor environment, contribute to sustainable building practices, and are key in reducing operational costs due to their potential longevity. Above all, they can give a building the beautiful look that sets it apart from any other in the surroundings. International experts from TU Delft, TU Darmstadt and Eurac Research have teamed up to create a series of courses on façades engineering to close this knowledge gap.

Façade engineering never sits still. It is a lively discipline with ongoing innovation involving the introduction of new materials, designs and technologies that improve the functionality, aesthetics and sustainability of buildings.

This course builds on this ongoing evolution by exploring current trends and innovations in façade design and technology with an emphasis on promoting sustainable and future-proof solutions. The possibilities offered by digitalisation and new materials are among the topics discussed, along with drivers of trend developments, the categorisation by Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), and market acceptance.

This course is relevant to architects, designers, engineers, and building professionals who will benefit from an overview of current façade trends, and wish to engage in creative thinking to design innovative and sustainable façades.

Syllabus

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the key drivers behind innovations throughout the façade design and construction industry.

  • Evaluate the maturity of emerging façade technologies using the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale and apply the 5 phases of market acceptance.

  • Define the role of façade systems in enhancing urban resilience against climate change.

  • Analyse how the three pillars of sustainability are actively shaping innovation and circularity in the façade sector.

  • Identify and select cutting-edge materials and technologies that boost building resilience and sustainability.

  • Contrast the strategic challenges of new-build façade engineering with the constraints of building renovation and retrofit
