Multimodal content — video, audio, and infographics — makes online learning more effective. Learners retain more when information is presented across multiple formats, and this course shows you how to create it.
You'll work through a systematic design process grounded in four key principles: purpose, space, time, and the instructor's role. Starting with foundational design theory, you'll move through hands-on creation of three content types: infographics, educational podcasts, and instructional videos. Tools like Canva, Venngage, and Visme are introduced to support your infographic work, and you'll hear directly from experienced practitioners through expert podcast interviews in every module.
By the end of the course, you'll have created real learning resources and refined them through feedback using a structured critical friend protocol.
After completing the course, you'll be able to independently design, create, and evaluate multimodal learning content using a systematic process. Rather than guessing which format to use, you'll make informed, evidence-based decisions aligned to your learners' needs — and you'll have a completed resource package to demonstrate those skills.
This course is relevant to instructional designers, e-learning developers, teachers, corporate trainers, learning experience designers, and higher education faculty. The skills you build — design thinking, content creation, and iterative feedback — apply across education sectors and industries wherever online or blended learning is used.
No prior design or software experience is required.
Syllabus
- Online Learning Design Principles
- In this module, we explore four key principles for your learning sequence: time, space, purpose, and the online instructor's role. We also cover the 'rapid-design process', providing tools and techniques for upcoming multimodal content creation. Prepare to design and create your own multimodal texts!
- Designing Infographic Content
- In this module, you will learn how to design and build your own infographic. Infographics add real value to online courses when designed and implemented well. Learn the many advantages of incorporating infographics into your online course. We suggest infographics work best when paired with a 'friend'. What does this mean? Continue to learn more!
- Designing Audio Content
- Audio resources and educational podcasts are popular. Do you listen to podcasts or e-books? In this module, we focus on audio content creation. Making your own podcast can be fun and simple. You will listen to experienced podcasters who created content specifically for their learners.
- Designing Video Content
- Visual storytelling makes complex ideas easier to understand, delivering impactful messages. In this module, you will create your own video and experience its power. Crafting an effective instructional video learning resource takes time. We share tips and tricks to save you time and energy when making your instructional videos. Lights! Camera! Action!
- Prototyping, Feedback, and Iteration
- You have designed and created learning objects. Now, prototype and iterate the three learning objects you've made, seeking feedback from colleagues to improve them. This module focuses on providing and receiving effective feedback, sharing a structured method called the 'critical friend protocol' for meaningful, constructive input.
