Visualizing Data in Excel

via Coursera

Overview

Raw data buried in rows and columns forces your audience to do mental work before they can act. When numbers sit in plain cells with no visual emphasis, hierarchy, or context, the most important insights get lost in the noise. In this course, you'll move from raw data to polished, decision-ready visuals using only Microsoft Excel. You'll format numbers for immediate impact, build and customize pivot tables and charts, work with text boxes, icons, and images as visual objects, assemble a multi-chart dashboard, set up end-user filtering, and export the finished result to PowerPoint. By the end of this course, you'll be able to produce professional data visualizations in Excel that reduce the mental effort your audience needs to find the insight, draw their attention to what matters most, and present your data in any format from a live spreadsheet to a board-ready PowerPoint slide.

Syllabus

  • Recognizing the Value of Data Visualization
    • Raw data buried in rows and columns forces your audience to do mental work before they can act. In this module, you'll articulate why Excel is a strategic choice for data visualization and identify the three core business benefits that make visual data more persuasive and decision-ready.
  • Formatting Numbers for Visual Impact
    • Raw numbers buried in spreadsheet cells don't explain themselves, and audiences shouldn't have to do that work for you. In this module, you'll build a toolkit of Excel formatting techniques that put numbers in context, make critical figures impossible to miss, and transform basic tables into clear, decision-ready visuals.
  • Building Pivot Tables and Charts
    • Your source data is rarely presentation-ready, and rebuilding the same charts from scratch every reporting cycle costs time you don't have. In this module, you'll construct pivot tables and pivot charts from raw tabular data, then customize them with branding, labels, and formatting that meet real organizational reporting standards.
  • Enhancing Spreadsheets with Visual Objects
    • Your spreadsheets can look as polished as a designed report if you know how to work outside the cell grid. In this module, you'll place text boxes, images, icons, and charts as free-floating objects anywhere on your sheet, then layer and align them into a cohesive, publication-quality visual that tells a complete data story.
  • Assembling and Publishing a Data Dashboard
    • Your charts are only as useful as how well they come together and how easily they reach your audience. In this module, you'll consolidate charts from multiple sheets onto a single dashboard, align them with professional precision, set up end-user filtering controls, and export the finished product to PowerPoint for presentation.
  • Conclusion
    • You've built a complete data visualization toolkit in Excel and you're ready to put it to work. In this module, you'll commit to a specific next application for these skills and identify professional resources that will support your continued growth as a visual communicator.
