Design immersive experiences with confidence in UX for Augmented Reality: An Introduction for Designers by Nuria Quero. By the end of this course, you will be able to define key AR concepts and device types, apply core UX principles such as presence, agency, and affordance to 3D environments, and outline a clear UX strategy for an AR brief—including interaction, onboarding, and basic user testing considerations. This course demystifies augmented reality by bringing scattered information into one structured journey. You’ll move from understanding what AR is and how it works, into the foundations of UX for AR, and finally into designing within 3D space—exploring field of view, 2D vs. 3D interfaces, interaction patterns, and error management. Whether you’re a UX/UI designer curious about immersive tech, a product designer exploring spatial experiences, or a creative looking to enter AR, this class will help you approach projects with clarity and confidence. To be successful, you should have a basic understanding of UX design principles and digital product workflows. No prior AR experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to think beyond the screen.

Syllabus

  • Foundations of Augmented Reality
    • This module introduces learners to the fundamentals of augmented reality and sets the stage for the course. Learners explore what AR is, the different forms it can take, and how it is used today. The module also outlines the course project so learners understand how concepts introduced throughout the course will be applied in practice.
  • AR Platforms, Devices, and UX Context
    • This module connects AR technology with user experience design considerations. Learners examine the devices and platforms that support AR and explore how technical constraints shape design decisions. By grounding UX principles in real-world AR contexts, learners begin to think critically about designing experiences that work across devices.
  • Core UX Principles for AR Experiences
    • This module dives into the core UX principles that differentiate AR from traditional screen-based design. Learners explore how users perceive, interact with, and navigate augmented environments. Through focused discussions on interaction, spatial design, and visual constraints, learners gain a practical framework for evaluating AR user experiences.
  • Designing for Usability, Onboarding, and Wrap-Up
    • This final module focuses on usability, onboarding, and error management—critical components of successful AR experiences. Learners consolidate what they’ve learned, reflect on key concepts, and leave with a clear understanding of how to apply AR UX principles thoughtfully in real-world design scenarios.
