This course is for students who are curious about using GenAI in their studies but want guidance on how to do so effectively and ethically. It will help learners who are uncertain about whether, when, and how to use GenAI, and how to make the most of it without compromising academic integrity. What the course is not: a guide to using specific GenAI products - if you aren't sure what's available to you, check your university web pages.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to GenAI in Learning
    • This module introduces what GenAI is and explores opportunities and risks for students. You'll hear from instructors and peers, try out a GenAI tool, and reflect on benefits and concerns.
  • Practical Strategies for Using GenAI
    • This module explores how students can use GenAI tools for common study tasks such as brainstorming, summarising, and feedback. Learners will experiment with prompts, compare outputs, and reflect on usefulness.
  • Ethics and Academic Integrity
    • This module focuses on ethical issues in GenAI use. Learners will examine plagiarism, bias, and responsible practice, and discuss how academic integrity can be supported in an age of GenAI.
  • Reflecting and Building Your Own Strategy
    • This final module helps learners consolidate their understanding of GenAI, reflect on their own use, and develop a personal strategy for using GenAI effectively and ethically in their studies. It concludes with closing reflections from the instructors.
