By the end of this course, you'll be able to build a risk matrix for your own systems and defend every row in it. You'll score likelihood and severity without letting the two collapse into each other, and you'll know where to dig for the risks nobody has written down yet. You'll keep that matrix honest with review cadences, monitoring, and game days. Mitigating a risk and removing it are different decisions with different costs, and you'll know which one you're making. You'll design service failures that are predictable, understandable, and reasonable. You'll put technical debt on the matrix with a score attached, which is how the argument for paying it down finally gets traction with the people who control the roadmap. And you'll carry a high-high list into a room full of executives and have it land. Most risk training treats risk as something to eliminate. Every complex system carries risk, so driving it to zero was never the job. This course treats risk as a portfolio you manage on purpose. The closing module covers what AI-enabled systems break about traditional risk practice. You'll finish with a working matrix you can take into your next planning meeting.

Syllabus

Risk as an Architectural Responsibility
- Risk management is a deliberate, priced decision about which failures you are willing to accept. This module establishes why that decision lands on the architect's desk, and separates the two values that make one risk comparable to another.
Building the Risk Matrix
- The risk matrix is the spine of this course. This module builds one from scratch: the eight columns that matter, the session that fills it with risks nobody had written down, the scoring that makes it sort, and the boundary that keeps it useful.
Keeping the Matrix Alive
- A matrix that stops being updated becomes a document teams plan around while it quietly describes a system that no longer exists. This module covers the review cadence, the monitoring column, and the game days that test whether your plans hold.
Acting on Risk
- Once a matrix sorts, the work becomes deciding what to do about the top of it. This module separates removing a risk from reducing it, designs service failures that stay contained, and writes the plans that run when a risk triggers anyway.
Risk as a Leadership Tool
- A matrix nobody acts on is a meeting. This module connects risk work to the planning cycle that schedules it, puts technical debt on the same two axes as everything else, and carries the top of the list into a room full of executives.
Risk in AI-Enabled Systems
- AI-enabled components fail in shapes the rest of your system does not produce. This module covers what changes, inventories the risks a single AI feature introduces, and scores them on the same eight columns you have been using all along.
