This course provides practical guidance on planning and writing an effective final research project, undergraduate dissertation, or capstone thesis. Learners will explore how to refine a research question, select appropriate research methods, develop a realistic project timeline, and work effectively with a supervisor. The course also covers the key principles of academic writing, including structuring a research project, writing clear and coherent chapters, and getting a final manuscript ready for submission. While examples draw primarily from the social sciences, the skills and approaches are applicable across a wide range of disciplines.

Syllabus

Making Sense of a Social Science Dissertation
- This module introduces the purpose, structure, and planning considerations involved in completing a final research project or dissertation. You will explore the skills and commitments required to undertake independent research, examine the typical components of a dissertation, and gain an understanding of the key stages involved in planning, conducting, and successfully completing a substantial research project.
Choosing a Research Topic
- This module helps you identify and refine a topic for your final research project or dissertation. You will explore different research ideas, evaluate their strengths and limitations, and consider their feasibility and academic value. Through this process, you’ll develop a focused research topic and refine it into clear, meaningful research questions that provide a strong foundation for your dissertation.
Choosing Your Methodology
- This module explores the range of methods available for collecting and analyzing research data. You will examine both qualitative and quantitative approaches, compare primary and secondary data sources, and evaluate the strengths and limitations of different methodological choices. The module also introduces key ethical considerations, helping you select research methods that are appropriate, effective, and aligned with the aims of your project.
Planning a Schedule and Working With Your Supervisor
- This module explores the study and project management skills needed to complete a successful dissertation. You will learn how to plan and organize a large research project, manage your time effectively, identify and address potential challenges, and develop a productive working relationship with your supervisor. The module provides practical strategies for staying on track, meeting deadlines, and maintaining momentum throughout the dissertation process.
The Structure of a Social Science Dissertation
- This module focuses on writing and structuring a final research project or dissertation. You will explore the standard components of a social science dissertation, develop strategies for improving your academic writing, and learn practical techniques for managing the writing process effectively. By the end of the module, you will be better equipped to produce a clear, well-structured dissertation and stay on track to meet your project deadlines.
Writing the Substantive Chapters
- This module focuses on writing the core chapters of a dissertation, guiding you through the purpose, structure, and content of each major section. You will explore how the introduction, literature review, methods, findings, and conclusion chapters work together to form a coherent research narrative, while learning practical strategies for producing clear, well-structured, and academically rigorous writing throughout your dissertation.
Preparing for Submission
- This module focuses on the final stages of preparing your research project for submission. You will learn how to edit, revise, and proofread your work to improve clarity and quality, develop a concise and engaging abstract, ensure references and formatting meet required standards, and confidently assess when your dissertation is ready for submission.
