This course is designed to introduce keyboard players to the various chord types utilized in contemporary music. In these lessons, you will learn the theory behind chord construction and perform exercises to drill chord types into your muscle memory. You will apply the chord types to tunes by performing with backing tracks. Upon completion of the course, you will have the knowledge to construct, recognize, and musically apply common and essential types of chords used in many styles at the keyboard.

Syllabus

  • Welcome to Piano Chords for Modern Music
    • Welcome to Piano Chords for Modern Music! Here we will cover all the details about the course and what you'll need to know to get the most out of your experience. In this first module, we will begin by discussing major and minor triads. We will identify how to efficiently learn music using the four pillars method. We will then practice triad inversions and arpeggios. Finally, we will practice everything we have learned by playing two songs that use these triads.
  • Major 7th Chords
    • In module 2, you will construct and play major 7th chords in a musical setting. We will begin by identifying the notes in a major 7th chord and use various exercises to increase your familiarity with playing them. We will identify and utilize inversions to move fluidly between these chords. Finally, we will use the major 7th chords in several tunes.
  • Dominant 7th Chords
    • In module 3, you will learn the difference between dominant and major 7th chords. We will begin by constructing and playing dominant 7th chords in various keys. Then, we will identify and utilize inversions to move fluidly between these chords. Finally, we will use the dominant 7th chords in several tunes.
  • Minor 7th Chords
    • In module 4, you will learn to construct and play minor 7th chords. We will begin by constructing and playing minor 7th chords in various keys. Then, we will identify and utilize inversions to move fluidly between these chords. Finally, we will combine all of the chords from this course into various tunes and play them in a musical setting.
