The "Pavement Construction Practices" course provides a thorough understanding of highway construction according to IRC and MoRTH standards. It focuses on selecting essential plants and machinery for constructing rigid and flexible pavement layers, including asphalt mix plants, concrete batching plants, and earthmoving equipment. Learners will explore project planning, scheduling, and monitoring, as well as construction sequences and guidelines to meet quality control requirements in compliance with IRC and MoRTH standards. The course offers practical insights into constructing various pavement layers, such as embankments, subgrades, granular sub-base layers, wet mix macadam, bituminous layers (DBM & BC), dry lean concrete (DLC), and pavement quality concrete (PQC). By the end, learners will gain comprehensive knowledge and practical skills, making them proficient in planning, executing, and ensuring quality in highway pavement construction in alignment with Indian standards. Target learners include civil engineering graduate and post-graduate students, as well as professionals in transportation and infrastructure development, with prerequisites in Concrete Technology, Geotechnical Engineering, Building Materials & Construction, and Construction Equipment & Methods.

Syllabus

  • Highway Plants and Machinery and Construction Planning
    • In this module, "Highway Plants and Machinery and Construction Planning," learners will explore various plants and machinery required for highway construction, including asphalt mix plants, horizontal and compact concrete batching plants, and wet mix macadam plants. The module provides a detailed examination of earthmoving, excavation, compaction, and paving equipment. It also covers factors affecting the output of plants and equipment and initiatives to improve quality. Additionally, the module offers a comprehensive understanding of highway project planning, scheduling, monitoring, and the corresponding software used.
  • Construction of Subgrade and Base Layers
    • This module, "Construction of Subgrade and Base Layers," extensively covers construction practices for flexible and rigid pavement embankments, subgrades, and base layers. It provides detailed guidance on specifications and construction procedures aligned with MoRTH and IRC standards. Additionally, the module addresses the required tests outlined in the test plan for quality assurance and quality control, ensuring compliance with standards necessary for high-quality highway pavement.
  • Construction of Flexible Layers
    • In this module, "Construction of Flexible Layers," learners will gain insights into construction practices for flexible pavement layers, including wet mix macadam (WMM) and bituminous layers (DBM & BC). The module explores the functions, material composition, and specifications of each flexible layer in alignment with IRC and MoRTH guidelines. It also covers the required tests outlined in the test plan for quality assurance and quality control, ensuring compliance with the standards necessary for high-quality highway pavement.
  • Construction of Rigid Layers
    • In this module on the Construction of Rigid Layers, learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of rigid pavement construction practices, focusing on the functions, material composition, and specifications of rigid layers. The module covers guidelines from IRC and MoRTH for constructing Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) and Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) layers. It also explores the importance and types of joints in rigid pavements. Additionally, the module addresses various tests outlined in the test plan for quality assurance and quality control, ensuring compliance with standards necessary for high-quality highway pavement.
