By the end of this course, Chelsea Jay will have taught you how to create a gorgeous, versatile scallop pattern from start to finish using Procreate on your iPad. You’ll learn how to build a custom scallop guide and template, sketch your design using the symmetry tool, test and refine your artwork, add colour, turn your design into a seamless repeat pattern tile, and create a second colourway. This course is perfect for beginners with very little Procreate experience, as well as intermediate students looking to expand their surface pattern design skills. To be successful, you’ll need an iPad with Procreate and an Apple Pencil, but no previous pattern-making experience is required. Chelsea shares the entire process she has honed over years as a Surface Pattern Designer and Illustrator, along with plenty of her favourite Procreate tips and tricks. You’ll finish the course with a finished scallop pattern and the skills to create your own repeat patterns from the cosy comfort of your couch, at the park, or even by the pool. Get ready to discover just how fun—and addictive—surface pattern design can be!

Syllabus

  • Understand Pattern Tiles and Set Up Your Procreate Workflow
    • Begin by understanding how seamless patterns work and what you’ll create in this course. You’ll explore the role of the pattern tile, review the class project, and build a foundation for designing a scallop pattern in Procreate.
  • Build Your Scallop Guide and Develop the Design
    • Set up the tools and guides you’ll use to build your scallop pattern. You’ll work with custom actions and a scallop guide template before sketching your design and establishing the visual foundation of your repeat.
  • Refine and Color Your Scallop Design
    • Now refine your design and give it a finished visual style. You’ll test your pattern for consistency, add color, and create a solid scallop outline to strengthen the overall design before turning it into a final pattern tile.
  • Create, Recolour, and Finalize Your Pattern Tile
    • Bring all of your work together to create the finished seamless pattern tile. You’ll produce the final tile, explore how to recolor it for different design possibilities, and review the completed scallop pattern.
