Syllabus

  • Installing Linux
    • In this module, we will explore the essential steps for installing Linux, including how to detect hardware and configure the boot process. We will also look at running Linux in a virtual machine and setting up GRUB for smooth system boot-up. By the end, you'll have a solid understanding of the installation and configuration process for both physical and virtual Linux environments.
  • Executing Programs
    • In this module, we will dive into the Linux shell, learning how to execute and manage programs through the command line. You'll gain skills in process management, including monitoring and controlling active processes, as well as adjusting execution priorities to improve efficiency and system performance. By the end, you'll be equipped to handle Linux processes with precision and ease.
  • Working with Text Files
    • In this module, we will explore how to efficiently edit and manage text files using two of the most popular Linux text editors: nano and vi. You’ll learn essential editing commands, how to search and replace text, and tips for navigating through large files. By the end of this module, you’ll be comfortable using both editors to modify text files in a Linux environment.
  • The Linux Command Line
    • In this module, we will dive into advanced command line techniques for customizing your bash environment and managing files. You'll learn how to redirect and filter data using powerful Linux commands like cut, grep, and pipes. Additionally, we'll cover working with checksums for verifying file integrity. By the end, you'll be proficient in using the Linux command line for a wide range of tasks, improving your productivity and system management.
  • Locating Data
    • In this module, we will explore various techniques for locating data on a Linux system. You’ll learn how to use the which command to find executables, utilize find and grep for searching files and content, and work with hard and symbolic links to efficiently manage file references. By the end, you'll have the tools to quickly and effectively locate files and commands across your system.
  • File Permissions
    • In this module, we will explore the fundamentals of file permissions in Linux. You'll learn how to manage file ownership and use POSIX-based permissions to control user access. Additionally, we’ll cover Access Control Lists (ACLs) for more advanced permission management. By the end of the module, you'll be able to configure and adjust file permissions to secure your Linux system effectively.
  • Managing Software
    • In this module, we will focus on managing software in Linux, starting with an overview of shared libraries and their importance. You’ll learn how to handle software installation, removal, and updates using both dpkg and apt for Debian-based systems, as well as rpm and yum for Red Hat-based systems. By the end, you'll be confident in managing software across different Linux distributions.
  • Managing Services
    • In this module, we will explore the management of services in Linux, starting with an overview of essential supporting services. You’ll learn how to manage services using both SysVinit and systemd, with a focus on the advantages of systemd in modern systems. By the end of this module, you'll be equipped to efficiently handle services and troubleshoot issues on your Linux system.
  • Managing Storage
    • In this module, we will delve into the essential tools and techniques for managing storage in Linux. You’ll learn how to create partitions using both fdisk and parted, as well as how to format partitions with different Linux file systems. We’ll also cover monitoring disk usage, maintaining filesystem health, and the process of mounting both removable and fixed media for efficient storage management. By the end, you'll be able to effectively manage disks, partitions, and file systems on a Linux system.
