Modern Java development demands applications that are scalable, responsive, and efficient. This course explores key advancements in Java concurrency, performance optimization, memory management, and networking, equipping developers with the skills needed to build high-performance applications using the latest Java features. Through a structured learning path, you'll gain practical experience with virtual threads, structured concurrency, garbage collection strategies, dynamic CDS archives, and modern networking capabilities. By applying these concepts in real-world scenarios, you'll learn how to improve application responsiveness, optimize resource utilization, and enhance overall system performance. What sets this course apart is its focus on combining modern Java platform innovations with practical implementation techniques. Rather than covering concepts in isolation, it demonstrates how concurrency, memory management, and networking work together to create efficient, production-ready applications. This course is ideal for Java developers, software engineers, and technical professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of advanced Java runtime features. Learners should have prior experience with core Java programming concepts and object-oriented development. This course is part three of a three-course Specialization designed to provide a comprehensive learning pathway in this subject area. While it delivers standalone value and practical skills, learners seeking a more integrated and in-depth progression may benefit from completing the full Specialization.

Syllabus

  • Concurrency – Virtual Threads and Structured Concurrency
    • This module introduces the concepts of virtual threads and structured concurrency in Java, highlighting their advantages over traditional platform threads. Learners will explore practical problems, understand thread management, and debunk common myths about concurrency. The module also covers tools and techniques for monitoring and managing concurrent tasks efficiently.
  • Concurrency ‒ Virtual Threads and Structured Concurrency: Diving Deeper
    • This module explores advanced concurrency concepts in Java, focusing on virtual threads, continuations, and structured concurrency. Learners will examine thread lifecycle states, the use of thread-local variables, and the management of scoped values to build efficient and maintainable concurrent applications.
  • Garbage Collectors and Dynamic CDS Archives
    • This module explores the principles and tuning strategies of various Java garbage collectors, including Serial, G1, and ZGC, as well as Application Class Data Sharing (AppCDS) for enhanced performance. Learners will gain practical skills in analyzing memory allocation, optimizing garbage collection, and configuring JVM parameters for efficient application execution.
  • Socket API and Simple Web Server
    • This module introduces the fundamentals of socket programming in Java, including both blocking and non-blocking server/client applications, datagram channels, and multicast group management. Learners will also gain hands-on experience configuring and testing a simple web server, as well as implementing secure communication using encryption techniques.
