This course features Coursera Coach! A smarter way to learn with interactive, real-time conversations that help you test your knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen your understanding as you progress through the course. Dive into the essentials of Android development with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, learning how to build modern, interactive apps from scratch. You'll master Kotlin fundamentals, UI layouts, animations, and text handling, empowering you to develop fully functional Android applications with confidence. The course starts with setting up Android Studio and creating your first app, guiding you step by step through the IDE, emulators, and project structure. You’ll then explore Kotlin basics, from variables, loops, and conditionals to data types, functional programming, and enum usage, building a solid programming foundation. Next, you'll learn Jetpack Compose for designing responsive, visually engaging interfaces. You'll explore layouts like Row, Column, and Box, animations, gradient effects, and text modifiers, applying these techniques in hands-on projects. The course also covers advanced Kotlin concepts including classes, interfaces, sealed classes, and UI state modeling for robust app architecture. This course is ideal for beginner developers, coding enthusiasts, or anyone aiming to start Android app development. No prior Android experience is required, but basic programming familiarity is helpful. The difficulty level is beginner-friendly yet comprehensive enough to build practical, real-world skills. By the end of the course, you will be able to confidently create Android apps using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, implement interactive UI components, animate layouts and text, and apply advanced programming concepts like classes and interfaces for robust application development.

Syllabus

  • Introduction
    • In this module, we will introduce you to Kotlin, the official language for Android development, and Jetpack Compose, Android’s modern UI toolkit. You will learn to set up your development environment, create your first app, and explore Kotlin fundamentals such as variables, loops, and data types. Additionally, this module covers Jetpack Compose basics, layouts, text modifiers, animations, and essential object-oriented programming concepts to build functional and interactive Android apps.
  • Downloading Android Studio and Getting Started
    • In this module, we will guide you through downloading, installing, and configuring Android Studio. You will explore its interface, set up your first project, and run it on an emulator. This prepares you to start coding with confidence.
  • Kotlin Basics
    • In this module, we will explore Kotlin, the official language for Android development. You will learn to work with variables, data types, loops, conditionals, and functional programming constructs. Advanced features like data classes, enums, and optionals will also be introduced for writing robust Kotlin code.
  • Introducing Layouts
    • In this module, we will explore Jetpack Compose layout components. You will learn to organize UI using Row, Column, and Box, and integrate images and shapes. By the end, you will be able to create structured and visually appealing layouts.
  • Jetpack Compose Basics
    • In this module, we will dive into Jetpack Compose basics for building modern Android apps. You will learn project setup, visual styling with gradients, and implementing animations. This section equips you to make apps interactive and visually engaging.
  • Text Composable and Modifiers
    • In this module, we will focus on text handling in Jetpack Compose. You will learn how to style, decorate, and animate text, and implement clickable or scrollable components. By the end, you can build text-based UI elements that are both interactive and visually appealing.
  • Exploring Kotlin Classes and Interfaces
    • In this module, we will explore object-oriented programming in Kotlin for Android. You will learn to define classes, interfaces, and advanced constructs like data classes and sealed classes. By the end, you will be able to design maintainable and robust application logic for real-world projects.
