This course provides a comprehensive understanding of AWS security fundamentals, including essential services and the evolving threat landscape in cloud environments. It covers the AWS Shared Responsibility Model, crucial AWS services, and security risks tied to cloud-native attacks. By the end of this course, learners will be equipped to identify security risks, use AWS-native tools to manage incidents, and ensure secure AWS workloads. Through engaging videos, readings, and practical knowledge checks, this course will guide learners to build a solid foundation in AWS security principles. Emphasis is placed on real-world scenarios to help learners apply theoretical concepts to practical environments. What sets this course apart is its unique blend of theory and hands-on learning, allowing learners to apply security principles to real-world AWS environments. The course focuses on AWS-native tools like AWS Security Hub and GuardDuty for monitoring and event management. This course is ideal for cloud professionals, security engineers, and AWS users looking to solidify their understanding of AWS security fundamentals. No prior AWS experience is required, although a basic understanding of cloud computing concepts is helpful. This course is part one of a three-course Specialization designed to provide a comprehensive learning pathway in this subject area. While it delivers standalone value and practical skills, learners seeking a more integrated and in-depth progression may benefit from completing the full Specialization.

Syllabus

  • AWS Shared Responsibility Model
    • This module introduces the division of security and operational responsibilities between AWS and its customers. Learners will explore practical examples of how these responsibilities are shared when using AWS infrastructure services, such as EC2 instances. By the end, you'll understand how to manage your part in securing cloud workloads and data.
  • Fundamental AWS Services
    • This module introduces key AWS services including compute, storage, networking, and database solutions, as well as essential security and governance tools. Learners will explore how to securely deploy and manage resources such as EC2, EBS, Route 53, and various database offerings. Best practices for permissions, service control policies, and secure usage of AWS resources are also covered.
  • Understanding Attacks on Cloud Environments
    • This module explores common cyberattacks targeting cloud environments, with a focus on AWS responsibilities and essential security services. Learners will examine top cloud-native threats, understand the impact of DDoS attacks, and discover practical mitigation strategies using tools like AWS Web Application Firewall. By the end, participants will be equipped to recognize risks and implement effective defenses in cloud-based systems.
  • Incident Response
    • This module explores the essential principles and best practices of incident response in AWS environments. Learners will discover how to prepare for, detect, and manage security incidents using AWS-native tools and industry guidance. Practical steps for handling unauthorized activity and leveraging Systems Manager Incident Manager are also covered.
  • Managing Your Environment with AWS Config
    • This module introduces AWS Config as a key tool for tracking and managing changes to your AWS environment. You will learn how to capture configuration snapshots, set up the configuration recorder, and define rules to evaluate resource compliance. Practical exercises will guide you through hands-on setup and monitoring of your cloud resources.
  • Event Management with AWS Security Hub and GuardDuty
    • This module introduces learners to AWS Security Hub and GuardDuty, focusing on how these services detect, manage, and respond to security events in dynamic cloud environments. You will explore threat intelligence sources, simulate security findings, and understand the distinction between security standards, controls, and checks. Practical exercises and real-world scenarios will help you interpret findings and automate event management.
