Overview

This course features Coursera Coach! This course takes you step by step through setting up an Express server and creating secure authentication systems with Passport, Auth0, and Node.js. You will learn how to build and structure an application using SQLite3, including handling cryptographic hashing to securely store user data. By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a complete authentication system with various login options, such as Google, Facebook, and Auth0, that you can integrate into your web applications. You will start by learning how to initialize the Express project, set up the server, and configure the app with routing and EJS templating engines. Throughout the course, you will explore different aspects of user authentication, including local login strategies and integrating third-party authentication services like Google and Facebook. As you progress, you will work on building a real-world "ToDo" app, incorporating database management, routing, and user authentication into a full-stack application. This course emphasizes practical skills, allowing you to apply what you learn through hands-on projects and code-alongs.

Syllabus

Application Setup and Server Initialization

In this module, we will guide you through setting up an Express application from scratch. You’ll initialize the project, install necessary libraries, and configure the server. We’ll also cover essential conventions and error handling to ensure your server runs smoothly.

Database Creation with SQLite3

In this module, we will introduce you to SQLite3 and guide you through creating a secure database schema. You will also learn how to securely hash user passwords and insert them into the database, ensuring proper data protection.

Configuring App Express

In this module, we will walk you through configuring the app file and setting up routing for your Express application. By the end, you’ll have a fully functional routing system for handling requests.

EJS Templating Engines with Express

In this module, we will introduce EJS templating and demonstrate how to use it with routing for dynamic content. You’ll also work on styling your application and integrating JavaScript for enhanced functionality.

Authenticating Username and Password with Express and Passport

In this module, we will dive deep into user authentication using Passport with Express. You’ll set up both login and sign-up forms, integrate session management, and secure password handling to ensure a smooth and safe user experience.

Google Authentication with Express and Passport

In this module, we will guide you through adding Google authentication to your app. You’ll integrate Google OAuth2 and ensure users can log in with their Google credentials, enhancing the authentication flexibility.

Facebook Authentication and Passport Login

In this module, we will show you how to integrate Facebook authentication into your Express app. You’ll set up the API and Passport strategy to allow users to log in with their Facebook credentials.

In this module, we will guide you through integrating Auth0 with Express and Passport. You’ll learn how to use Auth0’s authentication strategy for user management and secure access to your application.

Templating Engines and Routing to Build Out a Todo Exercise Application App

In this module, we will guide you through building a todo application using templating engines and routing. You will learn to add, update, and delete items from the database and manage state with EJS, while ensuring proper functionality through debugging and final reviews.
